Functional appliances are used to correct malalignment of the jaws. These appliances are designed for children and teens whose jawbones are still developing (adults with fixed jawbones would require surgery to fix these problems). Examples include expanders, MARA devices and Herbst appliances. If your jawbones are not growing at the same rate, or you have an under or overbite, a functional appliance can correct the issue.
